Five Signs Your Water Heater Is About to Fail

July 22, 2026 · 4 min read

Most tank water heaters last between eight and twelve years. As they near the end of that range, they usually give off warning signs well before they fail completely. Catching them early lets you plan a replacement rather than deal with a flooded utility room and no hot water.

Watch for rust colored or cloudy hot water, which often means the tank is corroding from the inside. Rumbling or popping noises point to a buildup of sediment that makes the unit work harder and wear out faster. Water pooling around the base of the tank is a serious sign that the tank itself may be leaking and should be checked right away.

Two more clues are age and performance. If your water heater is more than ten years old, or if it can no longer keep up with your household and hot water runs out quickly, it is likely on borrowed time. A tankless upgrade is worth considering at replacement time, since it heats water on demand and typically lasts longer than a tank unit.

If you are seeing any of these signs, Plumbarama can inspect your water heater and walk you through repair or replacement options for both tank and tankless systems across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Planning ahead is almost always cheaper than an emergency replacement.
